CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: Religion: ELS: Fellowship
Most Recently Posted Ask a Question
Q:From the sections comparing the WELS teachings with the ELS teachings, there seems to be no differences between the two synods besides the history. If this is the case, is there any talk of merging the two synods instead of having a fellowship relationship with the ELS.

A:You are right. There are no differences in the teaching of WELS and the ELS. We are already merged in the most important way: we are as one in our understanding of Scriptures and how to practice it. A corporate merger in a secular sense would probably cost more money than it would save and would not bring about any spiritual blessing we do not already enjoy. WELS and the ELS are in complete doctrinal fellowship with twenty other Lutheran church bodies worldwide, but we have no plans to merge with any of them.
