CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: Religion: Other Lutherans: LCMS

Q:I've npticed lately that you cite CTCR statements by LCMS when giving answers at the WELS Q&A site. Is LCMS theology that orthodox in your opinion, or does WELS pick and choose what they agree with?

A:Thank you for asking. The LCMS, as appraised by us and others, is a heterodox Christian and Lutheran church body. The publications of the CTCR are uneven in quality or reliability, but some of their works are very well done (for example, treatments of eschatology and exposing the errors of dispensationalism and generic millennialism).

If any publication is faithful to Bible teaching and would be helpful to our readers, we might well recommend it as a service to someone seeking trustworthy information. This is especially true if in our own circles we have limited resources to serve the needs of others. Being a small church body, we are grateful whenever we find helpful materials produced by others, and trust that our readers will be able to distinguish between a specific publication on a particular subject and everything that is said by the church body that produced it. And we often issue an appropriate reminder of that distinction.
