| I am not aware of any formal repudiation similar to what you are apparently thinking of. Our synod seldom makes formal statements of that nature, so it is not likely that this was ever done. What we hope people will understand is that true Lutherans never base their teachings on Martin Luther but rather on Holy Scripture and are fully willing to admit that the man was a sinner who sometimes made unguarded and unfortunate statements. All that we ask is that these unfortunate statements be viewed in the light of other statements the Reformer made on the same or similar subjects, and that the historical context of Luther's life and culture be examined to understand his emphasis more clearly. Above all else we pray that those who examine Martin Luther will, like him, be brought to embrace the eternal gospel of Jesus Christ and the message of full, forensic justification based on Christ's perfect atoning work. This message is for all mankind, Jew and Gentile. On that and related subjects we intend to make many public statements.
