| Q: | A question was raised concerning the limits of pain God will permit a person to endure. It seems there is something about this in the Bible in which it states that He would not allow and pain or burden which is more than a person could endure. | ||||||
| A: | I believe the passage you have in mind is 1 Corinthians 10:13, "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." This passage is speaking of temptation to sin. It contains both warning and comfort. It warns that if someone falls into sin or falls from faith he cannot blame God or make the excuse that the temptation was so strong he could not resist. God knows our strength and staying power. He won't let any temptation exceed it. He always gives us a way out, a way to resist temptation. We can take comfort that our merciful Father's help is always present in time of temptation. We therefore cannot use pain or personal problems as excuses for sin. Rather we trust that God will give us the strength to bear whatever he see fit to let come upon us. We can also make use of medical treatment to relieve pain or to help with emotional problems. Such treatment may be the way that God helps us bear up under these problems. | ||||||
