Q:With all the talk going around about smallpox, we may be faced with having to reintroduce the vaccine for this disease. I have been pondering whether or not it is proper for a Christian to allow his children to receive a vaccination that was developed through the use of fetal tissue. I understand that this is more and more common with vaccines these days. Is allowing such a vaccine to be given to our children making us complicit in the sin committed in the development of the vaccine?

A:It is true that some vaccines were produced using fetal tissue that was derived from aborted fetuses. While we would not condone such practices, the question is how do we view the vaccines that have been developed.

It is helpful to keep two basic principles in mind. First of all, we remember that God uses even evil for his good. This doesn't mean that we do evil things confident that God will use it for good. Nor would we concur with the evil that others may do. But once the evil has been done and God does bring some good out of it, we can admire the wisdom and power of God at work.

Some sinful methods were used in producing some vaccines. But God brought good out of these methods not because he was pleased with the method, but because he is powerful.
