| Q: | I am a young adult Sunday school teacher along with another gentleman at our WELS church. I was approached by a mother a couple weeks ago, who has a teenage son who is viewing pornography. She and her husband are both concerned and were wondering if there was a class or classes we could have that talked about this issue. So, I am curious if you know of any ministries in WELS that address this issue where maybe someone would be available to come and talk to our youth? Should this be a class geared more toward the boys, having the girls learn something else that is delicate for them to discuss in a room with boys in it? We're hoping to get some ideas as to best go about addressing this issue and if there are any helpful materials or organizations that we could get some info or help from in regard to this issue? | ||||||
| A: | Thank you for your question. I have been trying to research your answer and keep running out of time. The things I find in other places on the internet, I do not necessarily want to recommend to you. I would encourage you to search this website under ministry, parish services, youth discipleship. There you should find a resources page. You may also find material on the Northwestern Publishing House website, which can be linked from this site. A book that has short topics on this subject is entitled: “I Would Like To Know.” It is a series of brief answers to questions that were sent in to the magazine, “Forward in Christ,” when it had its previous title, “The Northwestern Lutheran.” The author of the book is Dr. Paul Kelm. It is out of print now. But your pastor may have a copy. Or there may be a copy in your church library, if you have one. Speaking about your pastor. It might be good to talk with him about this topic. There are many questions and answers on this site that deal with this topic. You could probably get enough material from them to develop a Bible Class. Work together with the older teacher. You asked about separate classes for the girls. That is up to you and your pastor. Girls and guys are both looking at internet pornography right now. Some people feel that it is important to inform parents that you plan to present a class on this subject to their children. Your pastor may feel that way. Then they are ready to answer the questions their teenagers may have. Or, it may be good to have parents and youth at the class together. Then you can encourage them to set boundaries and to talk to their youth about the subject. I don’t know of anyone within the WELS who is giving talks to groups of teens on this subject. You might also want to call the Youth Discipleship Office at 414-256-3274. God’s Blessings! | ||||||
