| Q: | I recently read in an article in the Christian News that any type of contraceptive practice is against God's will. Is that being too legalistic? What does WELS say? | ||||||
| A: | WELS has not made an official doctrinal statement on this issue. In our teaching we emphasize that children are a blessing from God and couples should beware of false materialistic standards of measuring the quality of their lives. Forms of birth control that are really methods of inducing a very early abortion must not be used. WELS, however, does not maintain that there is a clear scriptural prohibition against all forms of contraception. Such factors as the mother's health may be a valid concern of couples, which may lead them to consider limiting the number of their children. An overview of this topic is presented in "Birth Control as Ethical and Pastoral Problem," which first appeared in the January 1968 issue of the Wisconsin Lutheran Quarterly. This article is reprinted in Our Great Heritage, Vol. 2, p 106-125. This book is part of a set of doctrinal essays produced by Northwestern Publishing House. | ||||||
