CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: Christian Living - Human Behavior: Sexual Behavior: Use Of ED Medications
Most Recently Posted Ask a Question
Q:I have been married for 18 years and togather with with same woman for 21 years. Recently, I have encountered ED (errectile dysfunction) problems. My Doctor prescribed Viagra and it has helped. Is there anything in Scripture concerning the use of medications or other synthetic methods to allow for a married couple to engage in sex?

A:In this regard the Word God is silent. It provides neither an endorsement nor condemnation for the use of medication for this purpose. Scripture does readily acknowledge the role of sexual relations in our lives and how they are to be exercised within the bonds of marriage (1 Corinthians 7:1ff). It also cautions against any activity that would cause the commission of adultery in practice or in the heart (Matthew 5:27-28). If a medical problem is alleviated through the use of such medication and it does not lead to adultery in thought or in action, then its use would not be contrary to the Word of God.
