Q:A quick questions on a wels pastors answer about sex ed in public education i understand a little bit more now .but the last part realy bothers me because.if a weaker christian teenager knew the public official was a conservative wels christianwho was handing out condoms. Could not this action by a wels member cause him or her to stumble? Also it seems anything that goes againstGods plan for proper sex would be a direct conflict with our wels christian faith ? And is not this is what Jesus men't by trying to serve two masters?"As a Christian who is a government official, I have to work with the tools that my government allows me to work with as I act officially. I may choose to provide sex education and condoms. I know that is not the best solution. But I also know that I am living in an unChristian society. I would also work to spread the gospel of Christ as an individual in my society so that more people will learn about Jesus and serve him with sanctified Christian lives out of love for him."

A:Thank you for your question. As I wrote the paragraph about which you are speaking, I thought to myself, "Thank God that I am not in the position of the government official I describe!" You have identified the difficulty he or she is in. I would think that the government official would have to make it very clear in a very public forum that what he or she is promoting is not in agreement with her or his Christian morality. She recognizes that in the sinful world in which we live, the program she is promoting is the best the world can offer at this time to address the problems. I would think that she would say in her public witness that God's Word about total abstinence and respect for bodies as his temples is by far the best route to follow. She would have to publicly state that she recognizes that the approach she is condoning is not in agreement with her Christian principles. She is promoting the best that the government can offer -- the best that can be done under the political circumstances and in a sinful society. It is not the best that God can offer and that he does offer. Some government officials can make this distinction, others cannot. It would bother their conscience too much.

Jesus refers to this concept in Matthew 19:7-9. He talks about Moses permitting divorce in O. T. Civil Law, but that is not God's Moral Law for either the O. T. or the N. T. times (see verses 5-6). It is in wrestling with this action of Moses and its application to our current situation that I wrote what I wrote in the last paragraph of the previous answer.

Many people feel that it would be a great blessing for us if every issue were always totally black and white and we would never have to make difficult decisions in wrestling with God's Word and its application to a sinful society and how we should act in the various roles that we have been called by God to fulfill in that society: church member, parent, spouse, child, school principal, teacher, school board member, elected or appointed government official, etc. But God has chosen not to give us his law in a code book form. He has given us basic moral principles that need to be applied to life around us. We pray for wisdom to do it well. We pray that our fellow-Christians and that our God would forgive our failures and our sins. We pray that God would lead us to forgive others.
