Q:A friend told me her son has been married for several years, and has 3 children. When he was to be married, their pastor of a WELS church told her son that he would not perform the marriage because his future wife was pregnant, and that was a sin. Aren't we all sinners, and fall short of the Glory of God? But by the Grace of God, we would all be condemned. This son is still not able to serve as an usher because his wife was pregnant when they got married, and he has been married to this woman for several years.

It seems to me, as I understand it, that this pastor is wrong in doing what he is doing to these people. She is only a casual acquaintance, but has told me that she is considering going back to the Roman Catholic church, as they are sort of being "ostracized" by that pastor. In my opinion, I do not think any of my pastors in my WELS church would do that, or at least I hope they would not. God is merciful, and does forgive our sins, as I have been taught in the Lutheran church which I have been a member of all my life. I would appreciate answers to this woman's questions, so I can pass them on to her.

A:Premarital sex is a sin, but if the persons are repentant, it is not a barrier to them being married in church. You can't really draw any conclusions about the case because you have not heard the pastor's side of the story. If there were other factors involved, such as impenitence, there could have been valid reasons not to do the wedding. But the circumstances as you describe them would not in themselves be a reason not to marry the people.
