CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: Christian Living - Human Behavior: Homosexual Behavior: A GLBT support group

Q:My 10th grader is beginning to look into colleges/universites to attend upon graduation from HS. We have noticed that many compus' now offer (GLBT) gay, lesbian, bisexual and transexual support groups. Many classify it under their multicultural organization.

Do any WELS schools offer such a support/student organization. I have tried to contact the schools to no avail. I am particularily concerned with Bethany College in Mankato, Minnesota which was listed on a "gay-friendly" site as having one.

Please inform me as the WELS stand on such organizations at their colleges/universities. Also, why are we in fellowship with ELS if they, do indeed, allow such an organization within their school?

A:Currently in our society gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT) issues are high profile, and to support people with GLBT lifestyles is the politically correct and culturally sensitive thing to do. Since public colleges and universities exist to serve the general public, it is both understandable if not to be expected that they would sponsor or encourage support groups like the ones you refer to.

No WELS school, to the best of my knowledge, has such an organization. I cannot imagine the need for one in our circles.

Contact with Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato assures us that they do not have any such organization. Is it possible, that the Bethany listing was for a different Bethany?
