Q:Dear sirs at WELS, if a gay person does not want to go to hell for being gay, what must that gay person do?

A:When it comes to a person being homosexual, some debate whether it is due to nature or nurture. There is no doubt that a person's environment (friends, etc) can encourage a person in a homosexual lifestyle, but studies also reveal that some people seem to have a nature that is inclined to homosexuality. But just because a person may have homosexual feelings by nature does not mean that he cannot control them. As human beings we are all different. And we are affected differently by various sins. Some have a greater weakness for one sin while others have a weakness for another. For some, stealing may be a great temptation; for others it is sexual sins. But just because we have a weakness or a natural inclination toward a certain sin does not mean it is okay for us to give in to that temptation.

That would be true for a homosexual person. That person may struggle with the temptation of homosexuality his entire life. However, with God's help he can work at putting down those sinful homosexual desires when they arise in his mind. And with God's help he can avoid acting on those sinful feelings and desires. He can turn to Christ in repentance and hear those comforting words, "Your sins are forgiven". He can also turn to Christ and receive the strength to resist the temptation to act out his homosexual feelings.
