| Q: | I have a question about all of this gay marriage that is now taking place, today here in Portland. The city govt. decided to allow gay marriage this morning, there will be a fight in the courts to stop this for sure. My question is as a WELS member what can I (we) do? Should we join in the fight to stop this?? I am just not sure how to conduct myself in this matter, I am almost in tears, should we be praying like my mother said, "Come Lord Jesus, soon." | ||||||
| A: | Before I answer your question please permit a brief review of what the Bible says about marriage and homosexuality. God created humans as sexual beings (Genesis 1:27-28). He instituted marriage to provide companionship (Genesis 2:18), to produce and raise children (Genesis 1:27-28), and to provide for our sexual happiness (1 Corinthians 7:2-5). Marriage is a life-long union between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24. Romans 7:2-3). The Bible forbids sexual relations outside of marriage and sexual relations between people of the same sex (homosexuality or lesbianism). The Bible warns, "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God" (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). The Bible tells us, "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were enflamed with lust for one another. men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion" (Romans 1:26-27). As Christians we will want to reach out to people caught up in this sin and lead them to repentance. For "the Lord ... is patient, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). "As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live (Ezekiel 33:11). The Bible tells us that Jesus "is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world" (1 Jon 2:2). "The blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from every sin" (1 John 1:7). As Christians we have the responsibility in humility to call to repentance those we know have fallen into sin. "Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted" (Galatians 6:1). Although God did not give the church the authority to wield the law as a curb in society (he gave that authority to the government), individual Christian citizens in America have every right to make their voice heard and to participate in the political process. You cna let your voice be heard by writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper(s) and by writing to your elected representatives. You can support candidates for office who reflect what you believe will be the best policy for your state and community. Christian citizens in America do not have to remain silent nor should they if they believe that public officials are acting improperly or implementing policies that will be detrimental to society. I would also encourage you to take this and every problem to God in prayer. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective (James 5:16, Matthew 7:7, John 15:7). | ||||||
