Q:I know what our church's stand on the church which is stated in 1Tim 2:11,12. What I was wondering was what our church says to Judges 4:4 where it says Deborah, a prophetess, held court. This seems to indicate that a woman was being a leader of the faith. What is our stand on this passage?

A:The times of the judges were evil days when things were out of order in Israel. There were serious irregularities in the lives of virtually all the judges: idolatry in Gideon's family, Samson's immoral actions, Jephthah's horrible vow. There is no reason to assume any fault on Deborah's part in the situation that led to her becoming judge, but she is one of the few judges of whom it is not specifically said in the introductory formula that God made her judge (compare Judges 4:4 and 3:9, 3:15). Deborah herself criticizes Barak for his failure to exercise the leadership he should have and says it is a reflection on him that women had to fill the role he should have.
