CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: Christian Living - Human Behavior: Gender Roles: Women's Roles within the Church
Most Recently Posted Ask a Question
Q:I was wondering why WELS believes that women should not be pastor's or elders? Are there any good sources that you might know of on this subject?

A:Because the Bible says women should not exercise authority over men in the church (1 Timothy 2:12).

There are many questions on this topic in the archive section of this Q&A site under the heading Christian Living, Gender Roles. WELS has two study documents and a Bible class on this topic, all with the title Man and Woman in God's World. There also is a short paper by Walter Beckman on the spirit in which we apply these principles which is posted on this web site (Start from the heading Faith on the home page). Our booklet of doctrinal statements and This We Believe also have sections that deal with this. The shorter statement Man and Woman in God's World might be a good starting point for your study. You can get many of these documents from Northwestern Publishing House. Go to www.nph.net and search under "roles."
