Q:What is the context of 1 Corinthians 14:34 in Greek? How does it relate to women that are involved in evangelism and those that serve as a Deaconess? And really, aren't women allowed to speak out more than they should be in the church body today?

A:In 1 Corinthians 14 Paul is addressing a unique kind of worship service setting that existed in Corinth. Many people came to the service and shared various things with the whole congregation (1 Co 14:26). In the following verses, Paul instructs them to speak one at a time (not several at the same time). If another person stood up to speak, the one who had been speaking was to sit down. The next speaker was to critique what the previous speaker had said. In this setting, Paul says that women were to remain quiet otherwise they would be stepping out of their role by standing up and making a man to sit down and by assuming the authority of giving a critique of what the previous speaker said. This would violate their God-given role by assuming authority over a man (verse 34). If a woman is involved in evangelism or serving as a deaconess but is not assuming authority over any man, this activity is God pleasing. It is good to have women more and more active in their churches and to work in a way that is in keeping with the special role that God gave them.
