Q:I have been reading the Questions and Answers section of the WELS website for a while now. I read many questions regarding the place of women in the church. The answers to these questions have said the WELS believes that women should not teach men, as instructed by the Bible. I looked up one of the passages in regard to this response and did in fact see that it said that women should not teach men and such. However, in the very same verse it also said that women should not wear pearls or gold or wear their hair in fancy styles. Later in Corinthians, it says that not only should women not teach, but they should not talk at all in church. Does WELS also uphold these parts of the passage as part of its beliefs?

A:From the time of creation, God established different roles for men and for women. He wants women to humbly refrain from exercising authority over men, and he wants men to exercise authority as a loving head (1 Co 11:3, 8; 1 Ti 2:11-13). A more detailed treatment of this subject (all the Bible passages involved as well as applications) can be found in Prof. John Brug's Bible class booklet, A Bible Study of Man and Woman in God's World that is available from Northwestern Publishing House, Milwaukee, WI.
