| Q: | Did Luther teach inerrancy? If so where can I find a quote by him on the teaching? | ||||||
| A: | In "The Misuse of the Mass" (LW 36:137), Luther wrote: "The saints could err in their writings and sin in their lives, but THE SCRIPTURES CANNOT ERR. . . ." In "Defense and Explanation of All the Articles" (LW 32:11), he wrote: "...I am ready to trust them [the teachers of the church] only when they give me evidence for their opinions from SCRIPTURE, WHICH HAS NEVER ERRED." In a sermon on John 6 (LW 23:95), he said: "It is not man's word, which could lie and BE WRONG; it is the Word of God, who is the eternal truth." | ||||||
