CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: Bible: Interpretation/Meaning: Isaiah 19
Most Recently Posted Ask a Question
Q:I read Isaiah 19 and had difficulty determining the meaning of the chapter. The chapter focuses on the falling away of Egypt and then being sent a Savior. Assyria and Judea are mentioned as well. This is a portion of Scripture not familiar to me so I am looking for guidance in interpretation.

A:Isaiah 19 must be read in the context of the table of nations that begins in Isaiah 13 and extends through Isaiah 35 and in the context of the overall message of Isaiah. It conveys two main points. 1) All nations will be judged by God, and those who oppose his Word and his people will be condemned. 2) Christ comes as the Savior of all nations. This prophecy was fulfilled in part, when Egypt and Assyria were two of the countries in which the early church grew and prospered.

The two volumes on Isaiah in the People's Bible commentary series provide a good introduction to Isaiah.
