| We do not know exactly what the Urim and Thummin were. From the way in which they were used, it seems that they answered only questions which could be answered "yes" or "no." Some have thought that they were markers of some sort, like a white one for "yes" and a black one for "no." Since "urim" is similar to the Hebrew word for "lights" some have thought that they were lights or reflections in the stones on the high priest's breastplate. These are guesses, as Scripture gives no clear information.
There were other sorts of lots as when they "drew names" to see which tribes would get which portions of land.
