CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: Bible: Interpretation/Meaning: Proverbs 1:24-32

Q:Is Proverbs 1:24-32 speaking about someone seeking salvation but God not granting it?

A:God does not predestine anyone to hell, and he does not reject anyone who comes to him through faith in Christ, but he will not grant salvation to those who have rejected his law and gospel. Proverbs describes the people in question as those who hate knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord, who do not accept his advice and spurn his rebuke.

Jews and Muslims who reject Jesus cannot come to God and claim they have been serving him and deserve salvation. Those who reject what God's Word says about sexual morality and continue in their evil ways cannot claim they are following God.

Read the story of judgment in Matthew 25 and the beginning of Romans 10 for examples of the principle. 1 Corinthians 1 and 2 give further examples of those who reject God's wisdom in favor of their own.

If people seek salvation in their own way rather than God's way, they will not reach their goal.
