Q:Genesis, Exodus

Is it possible that the number 40 in the Bible could have been a "perfect" number and have really meant 39 or 43? Because if this is true, then the Flood or the wandering in the wilderness could have lasted for more or less time than was recorded.

A:The Bible sometimes uses round numbers as when the time in Egypt was described as 400 years (Genesis 15:13) though it is elsewhere specified as 430 years (Exodus 12:40). There is no indication that this is the case in the calendar of events during the Flood, which deals with very specific day and months (Genesis 7 and 8). The time in the wilderness is also dated very specifically so it does not seem that either of these dates is given in round numbers.
