CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: Bible: Other: trustworthiness of the Didache
Most Recently Posted Ask a Question
Q:Does the Didache contain errors/false teaching? Does it especially support the teachings of single denominations?

A:Didache means "teaching." The full name of this writing is "The Teaching of the Lord through the Twelve Apostles, to the Gentiles." It was written (perhaps by more than one person) between 120 and 150 AD. Self-evidently, it was not written by the apostles, all of whom were dead before AD 100.

It includes instruction for catechumens, following the pattern of the creed.

For the most part it is a book of rules for Christian living and for congregational worship and discipline.

It does not have the spirit or tone of the New Testament, because it does not clearly or consistently teach salvation by grace alone, through faith alone as the apostles did.

It does not support the teaching of any particular denomination because none of the modern denominations (including the Roman Catholic Church) existed at that time, and because its teachings are not entirely in agreement with any modern denomination.
