| Q: | I would like some information about the history of the Doxology at the end of the Lord prayer. When was it added, and who wrote the passage? | ||||||
| A: | The words of the Doxology are not in the early copies of the New Testament. They appear in some of the later copies that were written several centuries after Christ. There are several slightly different wordings of the Doxology, but the basic idea is the same. Since the thoughts expressed in the Doxology are similar to David's song of praise in 1 Chronicles 29:11-13, it is often assumed that thoughts from this prayer of David were used to compose the Doxology. People have guessed that the Doxology was added to the Lord's Prayer for use in the liturgy of the worship services in the early church. Who wrote the basic Doxology, we don't know. All we can say is that it certainly expresses Scriptural truths that were spoken by David, and down through the years many churches have chosen to use some of David's words as a meaningful close to the words of the prayer Jesus taught us to pray. | ||||||
