Q:Do we know with certainty that when a baby is baptized that God creates saving faith in that infant at that moment in time? If it is possible to resist the Holy Spirit, and babies also have original sin, then isn't it possible for them to resist the Holy Spirit? Basically, how do we know for certain that when a baby is baptized he or she actually receives the gift of saving faith?

A:We would go beyond Scripture to say categorically that every child ever baptized has always been brought to faith. That would seem to teach “irresistible grace.” But we still bring our children to the baptismal font in confidence. In that sacrament we know the Holy Spirit is powerfully at work in water and Word. Through water and Word he works to create faith. That such power of the Spirit is present in baptism is clear from John 3 and Titus 3.
