Q:My fiance initially wasn't sure if he was baptized until he asked his mom and found out that he had been baptized in a Methodist church. Is this recognized by the WELS church? And if it is, could he become a communed member?

A:Baptism performed in a Trinitarian congregation according to Christ's institution (applying water in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit) is a valid baptism and is recognized as legitimate by the Wisconsin Synod.

A person from a Methodist background who wants to become a communicant member in one of our congregations should talk to the pastor. The pastor will ask him to enroll in a Bible information class so that he can learn what we teach according to the Scriptures. When he has completed the Bible information class, he will be asked a few questions. Does he believe that what he has been taught in the class is in agreement with Scripture? Does he believe what he has been taught? Is he willing to make that his public confession of faith? If he can answer these questions affirmatively, he will be invited to become a communicant member of the congregation and will be accepted as such through the rite of confirmation.
