Q:What are the duties of a God Parent? A friend of mine is pregnant and has asked me to be the God Mother of her child. I want to, but I need to know what I would be getting my self into.

A:While having God parents for our children is neither commanded nor forbidden by God, yet it is a fine Christian custom. The role of God parent is to be another spiritual encourager who works with the child's father and mother to see to it that the child continues to grow in the grace of God that he/she first received in baptism. Among the important tasks would be praying for that little one regularly, reminding him/her of his/her baptism, and taking any other opportunity to share with that child the good news of the gospel. Often God parents remember their God child with gifts at birthdays and Christmas until the child reaches the age of confirmation. Even such gifts can be opportunities to nurture faith by supplying things such as new Bible story books - and then reading them yourself to your God child!
