CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: Sacrament of Holy Baptism: Other: Messianic Jews

Q:I've just got a question about Messianic Jews. Do they believe in the Trinity? That's my main question. I don't know much about them (only that they "believe" that Jesus is the Savior, and that they probably don't do the Sacraments). I've even seen it said that they are a Christian sect. Any information you'd have would be appreciated, and if you could state how they differ in belief from the WELS that'd be great too.

A:Messianic Judaism is a movement rather than a single "denomination" or "religion." For that reason what may be true of one group of Messianic Jews is not always true of all.

The groups about which I have some knowledge believe that Jesus (Yeshua) is the divine Messiah. They also believe in the Holy Spirit. They do not, however, believe that God is triune. They do not want to be regarded as "Jews for Jesus" or "Hebrew Christians"--or as a Christian sect.

Some, at least, believe that Jesus is the atoning sacrifice for sin and that forgiveness and salvation are God's gift and not something we earn.

They continue to practice Old Testament regulations (and would prefer that the Torah not be called the "Old Testament"). For most, perhaps all, Messianic Jews that does not mean Gentile Christians should do the same.

They do not practice Holy Baptism or the Lord's Supper.

It is clear from the above that these people differ in many ways from WELS in doctrine and practice.
