CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: Fellowship: LCMS: Why did the WELS wait so long to sever ties with LCMS?

Q:I was wondering what the synod's defense is for remaining in fellowship with the LCMS prior to the 1961 split when they were clearly in error and not heeding admonition. Do we not declare in article 4.13 of "This We Believe" that would should not join or remain in fellowship with those who preach or practice false doctrine? I believe it was proper for WELS to admonish the LCMS before severing ties, but why did we, the WELS, continue to remain in fellowship so long after the first, and second, and third, etc... admonitions concering fellowship? (Titus 3:10).

A:Before this time the synod in convention was not convinced that the Missouri Synod as a synod had as yet heard and rejected our testimony. Part of the problem was meeting schedules of the respective synod conventions, which did not meet annually. A factor was the need also to educate our own people and delegates to the problem. Perhaps we also were too believing of the LCMS claims that they were listening to our testimony. We were going the extra mile to preserve a fellowship. This is discussed in the books WELS and Other Lutherans, Church Fellowship: Working Together for the Truth, and The Wisconsin Synod Lutherans.
