| Q: | We like to travel, and if and when we come to a community that has a WELS church, will we be allowed to partake in Communion? Our Pastor says no. I guess that there isn't any kind of fellowship between the LCMS & WELS? | ||||||
| A: | The Wisconsin Synod enjoyed confessional fellowship with the Missouri Synod for over 90 years and was a founding member of the Synodical Conference with Misssouri in 1872. The Wisconsin Synod terminated fellowship with the Missouri Synod in 1961 because of differences in the doctrine and practice of church fellowship. Over the years the Missouri Synod had departed from the doctrine and practice of fellowship long held by the members of the Synodical Conference Your pastor is correct. The Wisconsin Synod practices close(d) communion. We invite to commune at our altars those who are members of congregations and synods in our fellowship. Since the Wisconsin Synod and the Missouri Synod are no longer in fellowship, Wisconsin Synod pastors don't commune members of the Missouri Synod. To do otherwise would be to give the false impression that confessional unity exists between the two synods. | ||||||
