| Q: | In a recent answer regarding Thrivent, the following statement was made: "Thrivent initially described itself as "faith-based" in their promotional material. WELS vehemently objected to this because Thrivent is on record saying their are not a part of the church. Thrivent then withdrew its promotion of "faith based" in favor of "values-based" or "values-driven" organization." A look at the mission statement on the Thrivent website clearly states that they are faith based in their mission. So are we again "vehemently objected to this"? My fear is that with sinful humans in charge of WELS and financial issues within WELS, that we will play with semantics rather than object to something objectionable. | ||||||
| A: | Thrivent is a sprawling, multilayered corporation. Our representatives from WELS deal only with the top executives and the church body liaisons. The understandings we reach with them do not always filter down to all their chapters and various corporate departments. After our initial complaint (which was joined by ELCA and LC-MS) "faith-based" disappeared from their literature and their newspaper ads. We were not aware that the phraseology still appeared on their web site. We will address this issue with them within days. | ||||||
