CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: The Beginning and the End: Evolution: Evolutionism vs Creationism

Q:I go to a local public school where they teach evolutionism almost exclusively. I absolutely do not agree with this and wanted a way to show it. I will not go the route of my brother, who just didn't do his evolution homework, so I decided to take advantage of an abstract project on a topic of our choice. I am doing evolutionism verses creationism. It took me like 15 minutes just to convince her to allow me to do this project, and now she's expecting to see something good. She wants some sort of tangible proof, like some sort of animals that could not have evolved. Can you help me out?

A:It is hard to help you with this since I do not know where you are located and what resources you may have available. Depending where you are you may be able to find a lot of books available at a local college or church library. If not, you can get them by mail if there is time. Some of the books by Jonathan Sarfati are good. Martin Sponholz of Martin Luther College has good books on the nature of science.

Another possible route is contact a science teacher at a Lutheran high school or college for material. Another route if you don't have time for this is to study the many internet sites that argue both sides of the question, such as Answers from Genesis.

The main question is whether you want to deal with one small area like the evolution of a certain part of the body or a bigger question like the nature of science or the mechanisms for mutational changes. Perhaps the best direction for you to go is with a topic like "reasons for doubting evolution," which shows the many flaws in evolution and the big gaps in the evidence. This places the burden of proof on evolution.

Neither creation nor evolution can be proved in a strict sense, since we can't go into a lab and reproduce them. We believe creation by faith in God's Word, not because it can be proved in a laboratory. For example, a lot has been made lately of the similarity of chimp and human DNA. It is reasonable to conclude that this happened because they diverged from a common ancestor, but it is equally reasonable to conclude that each came from separate but similar designs from a common designer.

You are a brave young lady to undertake the project. How well you are received depends on how open your teacher is to listening to other views. Whether she is open to your views or not, giving a clear testimony to your faith can be good for you and your faith. Just remember that we do not think we can prove how the world was created because we cannot go back to the beginning and witness it. All we can demonstrate is that the evidence for evolution cannot demonstrate the case for evolution from one kind of life to another. The evidence can be explained by creation as well as evolution. The two groups are starting with different presuppositions.
