| Q: | Our pastor constantly refers to having the "finest wines and best meats" for us when we get to heaven. Is this found anywhere in the Bible, or is he preaching false doctrine to us? | ||||||
| A: | Perhaps because of our inability to image how wonderful life will be in "the new heavens and new earth" of eternal life in glory, the Bible often compares or contrasts the quality of life we'll enjoy there to the kind of life we now experience. The Bible uses the picture of feasting and celebrating, enjoying highest quality food and drink, rejoicing in godly companionship, and enjoying peace and security--and in this way provides the strong message that life will be wonderful, the most wonderful kind of life that we can imagine. Your pastor is simply reflecting this kind of language drawn from the Bible, and his purpose is the same--to assure God's people that we have a most delightful life to look forward to in heaven. I urge you to ask him more about this. Perhaps he is not aware that his words are possibly being misunderstood. Bible sections that use this kind of imagery would include Isaiah 55:1-2 (dealing with enjoying the gospel as believers), Isaiah 65:17-25, and Matthew 8:11 (Luke 13:29). Jesus used this kind of language in parables that spoke of our invitation to enjoy the gospel and/or heaven, as in Matthew 22:1-4, and visions given in Revelation do the same (Revelation 19:9). | ||||||
