CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: Mary: Mother of Jesus: Is Mary important at all to you?
Most Recently Posted Ask a Question
Q:We as Catholics beleive that Mary was a virgin her entire life and that when they told Jesus that his brothers and sisters were waiting, that they were refering to his cousins. We beleive that she never sinned.

According to you is Mary a Virgin?
Is Mary the mother of God?
Did she ever sin?
Is she important at all?

The way I see it is like this: if every person in the world fell into a river and was pulled out except for one who was grabbed before she fell into the river, was she any less saved?

The person I am referring to is Mary.

A:According to you is Mary a Virgin? Yes, until the birth of Christ. Nothing in Scripture answers the question of whether she remains so after the birth of Christ, so this is an open question.

Is Mary the mother of God? Yes, the child born to her is true God. He, of course, existed as true God already from eternity.

Did she ever sin? Yes, she had a sinful nature which expressed it self in sin. There is absolutely no evidence in Scripture that she is an exception to the rule that all sin and come short of the glory of God. This is true only of Jesus.

"The way I see it is like this: if every person in the world fell into a river and was pulled out except for one who was grabbed before she fell into the river, was she any less saved?" We cannot base our teaching on what we imagine or think, but on what Scripture says. It says all are sinners.

Is she important at all? Yes, as a model of faith and obedience. This does not mean we are to pray to her or give her any sort of veneration or worship or that she shares in the work of Jesus who is the only mediator and redeemer.
