CSC: WELS Topical Q&A: Mary: Mother of Jesus: Mary

Q:Does everything have to be clearly spelled out in Scripture to be understood. The "Trinity" isn't directly mentioned in the Bible, yet Catholics have always taught this. In regard to Mary being sinless, was she not the "Arc of the New Covenant", and would God allow his Son to be in an unclean womb? Catholics beleive Mary needed a saviour, but was saved by Jesus before she fell into the pit of sin. How does this condradict scripture?

A:Every doctrine we teach must be in Scripture. The word Trinity is not in Scripture, but Scripture teaches that God is three and he is one. The word Trinity simply says the same thing.

The sinlessness of Mary is not only not in Scripture--it is contrary to Scripture. There are many passages in Scripture that say everyone is sinful--no exceptions except for Jesus. Read Romans 3 as an example. For this reason, the Catholic teaching is false and unbiblical. Worse yet, this is used in support of praying to Mary and turning to her as a mediator. The veneration of Mary is in effect worship of Mary. This is idolatrous. Christ is our only mediator.
