Gurgel has been answering your questions in Forward in Christ magazine since 2001. He also is a professor at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon; and a pulpit assistant at Calvary, Thiensville, Wis.
Baseball is Gurgel's favorite summer past time. He's busy coaching and watching his sons play. A trip to California where the family stayed at a converted Victorian mansion on Nobb Hill in San Francisco is a memorable vacation. Cable car lines ran just outside the door of the mansion. The family rode every mile of the cable car lines for three days and enjoyed all the sights and scenery of San Francisco.
As Gurgel preached from 1 Kings 19 for his farewell sermon vicar year, there was a thunderstorm and pouring rain. As Gurgel finished describing how fire came down from heaven and consumed Elijah's offering on Mt. Carmel, lightning struck and blew out the sound system. Gurgel then had everyone's attention!
Encouragement to enter the public ministry came from watching his father's own parish ministry. More inspiration came from watching his two older brothers grow in their faith as they made their way through college and seminary.
